    1202: Assam Records Highest-ever Single-day COVID Spike

    Guwahati: Assam recorded the highest-ever single-day spike on Saturday with 1,202 new coronavirus cases, in which 777 positive patients from capital city Guwahati alone. Accordingly, after Saturday’s number, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Assam has touched 11,001.

    Taking cognizance of the development, the government of Assam is likely to revise the order of ‘lockdown relaxation’ to mitigate the griming situation. On Saturday, Assam’s Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna tweeted, “Please wait for a revised order tomorrow”. State’s health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said, “Time for all of us to be extra vigilant”.  

    Till Saturday, 6,327 Covid positive patients were released from various hospitals of the state while 4,657 patients were still found active besides witnessing a fatality of 14 positive persons.

    Earlier, the state government announced certain relaxations for the ongoing lockdown in Kamrup Metro district, under which the state’s largest city Guwahati falls, from July 5-12.

    Across the Northeastern states, Assam’s capital Guwahati is the worst coronavirus-affected city which has been undergoing a two-week long ‘total lockdown’ that started on June 28 midnight.

    Notably, Minister Sarma will address the state on Sunday evening at the state Secretariat, Janata Bhawan.
