13 COVID-19 patients killed in Maharastra Hospital fire
Guwahati: At least 13 patients lost their lives after a fire raged in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Maharashtra’s Vihar (W) at the wee hours on Friday.
A short circuit in the air conditioning unit of the hospital is said to be the preliminary cause of the fire. The fire broke out at around 3 am in the ICU of the Vijay Vallabh Hospital.
The dead included five women and eight men. While the youngest victim was a 23-year-old boy, the oldest was a male patient aging around 68 years.
The incident comes as Maharashtra battles the second wave of coronavirus and an unprecedented surge in COVID infections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the deaths in Palghar district’s Virar “tragic”. “Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” the PM office quoted him as saying in a tweet.
The Prime Minister has also approved an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next kin of those who have lost their lives due to the hospital fire.
Moreover, Rs 50,000 would be given to those seriously injured.
