East Jaintia Hills Police arrested fourteen foreign nationals in Meghalaya over the last four days. Out of the fourteen, twelve persons were detected with Nigerian passports, one with Ivory Coast passport and one person was detected without a passport.
The arrested foreign nationals travelled from Nigeria to Dhaka by air and were trying to enter India via Bangladesh. The individuals claimed to be footballers and have entered the country to play soccer with the Indian Football clubs and engage in the textile business.
“The arrestees were picked up by some persons in different batches. From Dhaka, these persons took them to an unknown place near Indo-Bangladesh International Border. Thereafter, they travelled by cars up to Silchar and boarded a bus from Silchar to Guwahati,” East Jaintia Hills Police stated in a press communique.

“We are determined to unearth the larger design behind this sudden illegal immigration,” the police added. The police informed that the fourteen individuals were arrested during checking at different places. They have been apprehended under Foreigner’s Act and further investigation is on to nab the people who helped the foreign nationals to illegally enter India.

Identity of the informer will be kept secret,” East Jaintia Hills Police said.
