Tura, October 28: Tension arose in Garo Hills when a labourer seeking for work was shot in his leg by a mixed gang of locals. The 19-year-old victim hails from Bilasipara village of New Bongaigaon in Assam.
While sharing his plight with the police of South Garo Hills, the victim Kamrul Islam told the police that he was approached and threatened by a group of five people. The group was believed to be headed by a non-tribal Muslim person.
Apparently, they demanded money from him and on being refused, they took the step of shooting at Kamrul.
The victim was taken to Patalgittim government health centre in Nangalbibra for medical help but has been now shifted to Goalpara hospital for fast and better treatment.
The coal belt of Nangalbibra-Jadigittim area faced an NGT ban on coal mining and this has given birth to such crimes in those secluded areas. Not only this, the ban has highly affected the militant groups as well because major groups opted to surrender to the authorities due to insufficient funding.
