Two people have been killed since February 28th, 2020 in clashes between the members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and non-tribals in Ichamati at East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. The two deceased were identified as Rupchand Dewan and Lurshai Hynniewta.
On the other hand, as many as ten non-tribal people were stabbed at Bara Bazaar in Shillong on February 29th, 2020. Dewan, a migrant labourer from Assam, died on the way to the hospital after being stabbed.
Tension gripped Meghalaya after a meeting opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and seeking implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime in the state organised by KSU turned violent on February 28th, 2020 after it was attacked by non-tribals.
Internet services were suspended for 48 hours beginning 10 PM on February 28th, 2020, in six districts of Meghalaya – East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills – following the violent clashes.
The KSU members were holding a meeting with local villagers demanding an ILP for the entire state at Ichamati village at Shella. At around 3 pm, clashes broke out between the KSU members and the local non-tribals of the area.

Curfew is in place in Shylla and parts of capital Shillong with the internet being suspended since February 28th, 2020.
“All Citizens, Social Organisations, Religious Organisations, Dorbar Shnongs, Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla and all peace-loving people from all spheres of life, are requested to kindly unite in fighting the menace of propagating and spreading of rumours, hate-mongering, regarding the incidents that happened in the State, which may lead to misinformation about the real facts of the situation,” Meghalaya Police said in a statement.
