2 years on, Assam Congress slams Centre for note ban

Guwahati, November 8: The Congress will hold a statewide protest on Thursday, to mark two years of demonetisation.

The party has also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise for “ruining and wrecking” the economy.

The Assam Congress leaders and workers will stage protest infront of the Reserve Bank of India building here. The protest will be led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora.

It may be noted that the Congress party launched a Twitter campaign to protest against the note ban excerise. ‘#DestructionByDemonetisation’, the Congress hastagged its Twitter posts.

On November 8, 2016, the Government of India announced the demonetisation of all ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi series. It also announced the issuance of new ₹500 and ₹2000 banknotes in exchange for the demonetised banknotes.

The Government claimed that the action would curtail the shadow economy and reduce the use of illicit and counterfeit cash to fund illegal activity and terrorism.
