Torrential rains, cyclone and landslides that hit the state of Meghalaya on May 5th, 2019, has affected around 21 villages in the state causing maximum damage to the East Khasi Hills district.
From 21 affected villages, 12 villages are from East Khasi Hills, two in West Khasi Hills, five in South West Khasi Hills and one each in East Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi and South Garo Hills.
According to a status report published by the Meghalaya Disaster Management Authority (MDMA), cyclone, heavy rain and landslides were experienced in various parts. However, there was no loss of life, only one person got injured in East Khasi Hills.
17 houses have been damaged with the maximum number at South West Khasi Hills. Roads, public and government buildings and schools have been badly affected, according to media reports.
Meanwhile, the state authority is awaiting a detailed report from the district disaster management authorities about the damage caused from Garo Hills.
