President of India, Ram Nath Kovind will confer the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2017 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in a special investiture ceremony, on February 6th, 2019.
Three artists from Assam will be conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 2017. Noted Sattriya exponents Jagannath Bayan and Ramkrishna Talukdar and art director Nuruddin Ahmed have been selected for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award for 2017. Bayan has trained several people in playing the khol, and has taken part in several programmes across the state and abroad.
On the other hand, LN Oinam Ongbi Dhoni Devi for Manipuri dance has been selected in the field of dance along with nine other artistes from the rest of India. In the field of theatre, nine eminent artistes have been selected for the Akademi Awards 2017. Among them, Shougrakpam Hemanta Singh has been selected for Shumang Leela, the most vibrant performing arts style from Manipur, for the Other Major Traditions of Theatre category.
For the Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre and Puppetry category, KC Runremsangi, a native of Mizoram, has been selected in the Folk Music category,
The General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi selected 42 artists from the field of Music, Dance, Theatre, Puppetry and Overall contribution/scholarship in the Performing Arts for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2017 at its meeting in Imphal, Manipur that was held on June 8, 2018.
42 artistes from across the country will receive the award for their excellence in various performing art forms. Vijay Verma and Sandhya Purecha have been selected for the Akademi Award 2017 in the field of Overall Contribution/Scholarship in the Performing Arts.
Limca Book of Records
The 101-feet Durga idol, installed by Guwahati-based renowned artist Nuruddin Ahmed at the Bishnupur Sarbajanin Puja Committee pandal in the year 2017, has been enlisted in the Limca Book of Records as the tallest Durga idol this year. The idol was made of bamboo.
A product of JJ College of Arts, Mumbai and Lalit Kala Academy, Ahmed was born at Sathikuchi in Nalbari. He is also associated with mobile theatre movement of Assam since the last 37 years.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards
The Sangeet Natak Academi, the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama an autonomous body of the Union Ministry of Culture comes up with the awards every year to symbolize the highest standard of excellence and achievements, but also recognise sustained individual work and contribution.
The award started from the year 1952 and it carries a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000, a tamrapatra (a brass plaque) and angavastram (a shawl).
