GUWAHATI: The capital city of Guwahati began hosting one of the biggest sporting events in India after lockdown- 36th National Junior Athletics Championships 2021 from Saturday.
Inaugurating the sporting event at the Sarjusarai Stadium, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “In the past couple of years, we have developed an environment conducive for sports in Assam. The 36th National Junior Athletics Championship 2020-21, organised by Assam Athletics Association, is another step towards realising the dream of making Guwahati the sports capital of our nation.”
The 36th National junior athletics championship is for athletes under-14, 16, 18 and under-20 boys and girls.
During the five daylong events, at least 1,637 athletes from all over the country would be participating in various events. The Championship will conclude on February 10.
Assam would be fielding some 78 athletes in 90 events while Haryana has the largest group with 159 athletes, followed closely by Tamil Nadu with 150.
