41 Students Fall Sick After Consuming Mid-Day Meal In Assam’s Tinsukia

The mid-day meal was supplied by an NGO called Ghanashyam Seva Samiti

At least 41 students fell sick allegedly after consuming mid-day meal in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on November 8th, 2019. The incident took place at Baruahola High School at Baruahula village in the district.

Later, the students were admitted to the Tinsukia Civil Hospital for medical assistance.

As per information, the mid-day meal was supplied by Ghanashyam Seva Samiti, a Non-Governmental Organisation, in the school. Locals and guardians of the students accused the NGO of supplying poor quality meal to the students.

Speaking to media persons, a teacher said, “Students go for mid-day meal class-wise. So, students of class I had their meal first. Thereafter, some of the students complained about abdominal pain and vomiting. Some took urgent leave. Later, the principal took the matter seriously and asked other students not to have meal. Then, we have admitted the sick students here immediately for medical assistance.”

It may be mentioned that the state government’s decision to hand over the responsibility of mid-day meal in the schools to the NGOs was vehemently opposed by the existing cooks of the mid-day meal across the state. The body of the cooks also staged several protests against the government’s decision.
