Silchar, October 9: Police seized brown sugar worth around Rs. 2 lakh and apprehended a youth in this connection from Lalcherra in North Tripura district on Monday night.
Sources said police, acting on a tip-off, carried out an operation at Lalcherra around 10 pm last night and seized 430 small containers having brown sugar. The market value of the drugs, which have been sent to a forensic laboratory in Agartala, has been estimated at around Rs. 2 lakh.
A youth identified as Baharul Islam (29), a resident of Fulbari in Assam-Tripura border town Churaibari, was arrested. He was produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody.
Another youth who was with Baharul at that time managed to whisk away from the spot. The duo was travelling to Dharmanagar with the drugs.
Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb had recently said the government would take stern steps to curb the sale of illegal drugs and would extensively work to make Tripura a drug-free state.
