    48-Hour Curfew Imposed In Shillong; Search For COVID-19 Carrier Begins

    Meghalaya reported its first novel coronavirus case when a doctor at Shillong's Bethany Hospital was tested positive

    The District Magistrate, Shillong has imposed a curfew for 48-hours in the Shillong Agglomeration area starting from 6:00 am of April 14th, 2020 with the exception of essential services.

    This comes after Meghalaya reported its first novel coronavirus (COVID-19) case on the night of April 13th, 2020 when a well-known doctor at Shillong’s Bethany Hospital was tested positive. 

    The state government has launched a massive search for the spreader and has announced a two-day curfew in the capital city.

    “All the residents are requested to kindly cooperate and refrain from coming out of the houses to enable the Health Department officials to do contact tracing and take appropriate remedial measures,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.

    All residents of the State who may have visited Bethany Hospital, Nongrim Hills, Shillong on or after 22nd March 2020 have been requested to immediately register themselves by calling 108 or visiting the following link http://www.meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid/login.htm.

    “The Government is fully prepared to handle the situation and there is no need for the public to have any anxiety on this account. However, it is once again strongly recommended that all residents of the State must use a protective two-layer cotton cloth material to cover the nose, mouth chin as a mask and follow the hand hygiene, cough etiquette and social distancing protocols,” Sangma added.

    In view of this development, the Cabinet will be meeting again on the forenoon of April 14th, 2020 to review the situation.

    The Meghalaya government on April 13th, 2020 has decided to extend the lockdown till April 30th, 2020. The government has also banned inter-district and inter-state movement.

    Helpline 1070 activated

    Due to heavy traffic in the helpline no 108, the Meghalaya government has activated 1070 helpline number for citizens to call and register.

    “Those who have visited Bethany Hospital, Shillong on or after 22nd of March, 2020 or Bethany Hospital, Nongpoh on or after the 30th of March, 2020. Please call to register. Additionally, you may also visit http://meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid,” Sangma said.

    He added, “We urge all our citizens to not panic. The Government is there to help you. Please cooperate with the Government by sharing your information and informing everyone around you to do the same.”
