The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against five persons associated with the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) for hatching a conspiracy to carry out terror strikes in Assam.

Kamruj Zaman, who hails from Hojai district of Assam, had joined the proscribed terrorist organization in Jammu and Kashmir. He underwent nine-month weapon training in the jungles of district Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. He was living in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar since 2013 as a cloth-seller. Zaman’s family hails from Sarak Pilli village in Hojai.

It may be mentioned that on April 9, 2018, at around 8.30 pm, a photograph of Zaman, holding an AK 47 assault rifle, claiming to be a new member of Hizbul Mujahideen was uploaded on the Facebook, which put the security agencies on alert and accordingly an entry was made at the Jamunamukh Police Station. The photograph was posted by Mannan Wani, the slain terrorist of the outfit on his Facebook account.

In the photograph, Zaman, who changed his name into Hamzah Hizbi, mentioned his ‘code name’ as Dr Hurairah. He mentioned his education qualification as ‘MA English’.

Zaman later escaped to Bangladesh fearing his arrest. After returning from Bangladesh, he visited Assam in August 2018 and stayed back for ten days. According to NIA, he conspired and recruited his associates namely Sahnawaz Alom, who is a childhood friend of Zaman, Saidul Alam, Omar Faruk and others as members of Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen in order to raise an HM module in Assam.

Zaman, who was recruited by the outfit in 2017, was arrested from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on September 13th, 2018. The NIA investigation revealed that Zaman and Co. were planning to carry out terrorist acts by way of bomb blast and armed attack in Assam.

According to the Assam Police, Lumding was their first target to recruit more operatives for the outfit.

Established in 1989 by Muhammad Ahsan Dar, Hizbul Mujahideen, that has its headquarters in the Muzzafarabad (capital of Azad Kashmir) in Pak occupied Kashmir, has been designated as a terrorist group by India, the European Union and the United States.
