    62 Bangladeshis held along Indo-Bangla border since 2019: BSF

    Over 44,645 cattle heads and 47,940 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup were seized too

    GUWAHATI: Illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh borders have seen a rise in recent years with at least 62 Bangladeshi nationals being caught by Border Security Force (BSF) since 2019.

    On Monday, addressing the media, Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General of BSF (Guwahati frontier) informed that the numbers of apprehension of Bangladeshi nationals along the Indo-Bangladesh borders have jumped from 2019.

    He informed, “In 2019, at least 27 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended while in 2020 it was 35. On the other hand, while at least 219 Indians were held in 2019, some 263 were apprehended in 2020.”

    As per BSF official figures, at least 44,645 cattle heads were seized since 2019 too. Another 47,940 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup, 4382 kilos of ganja and some 91,319 Yaba tablets were also seized during the last two years.

    BSF Guwahati Frontier since its inception has been assigned to guard Indo-BD Border in states of WB and Assam with an area of responsibility of 509 Km along the Bangladesh border, which includes 91.726 Km long riverine borders, Char and undulating grounds.

    “All these features make border management very challenging. To secure the assigned International Border on Indo – Bangladesh border, 11 BSF Bns are deployed under 3 sectors including a water wing,” he added.
