65.5 per cent turnout counted till 3 pm in first-phase of Panchayat Election

Guwahati, December 5: Amid major anomalies in the first phase of Panchayat elections in 16 districts, after the counting at 3 pm, the first phase of Panchayat elections in 16 districts witnessed 65.5 % per cent turnout as counted till 3 pm, Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) announced.

“Counting in few other polling booths are still being conducted and we are expecting to increase the percentage by another 10 per cent. The final list will be released by 10 pm,” Assam election commissioner H.N. Bora said.

However, despite ASEC claims of peaceful polling today, several spordic incidents of violence and anomalies in polling has surfaced.

ASEC has said that 20 anomalies have been noticed so far in the polling booths and re poll will be conducted in those booths.

The first phase of elections were held today from 7 am till 3 pm in 1477 polling stations across 16 districts.

The second phase of the election will be held in 9428 polling stations out of which 3081 are sensitive 3081 and 1666 are very sensitive A total of 35,056 candidates are in the fray of the elections in December 9.
