71-year-old man trampled to death by elephant in Assam’s Digboi

Guwahati: A 71-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Balijan Nepali Gaon in Digboi, Assam’s Tinsukia district on Sunday.

The deceased identified as Nirmal Singh Chetry.

According to the sources, the incident occurred when he went to cut grass for feeding his goats in the morning. When he did not return home, the villagers began a search and found his dead in a paddy field.

According to official, the environment and forest department would give Rs 4 lakh in compensation as per government norms to the victim’s next of kin after receiving the post-mortem report and other appropriate documentation.

Locals claim that wild elephants from the Dehing Patkai reserve visit the area. According to them, there had already been multiple incidences of individuals being killed by wild elephants, said sources.
