Guwahati: As preparations are underway to celebrate the 75th Independence Day with utmost enthusiasm, the Assam Police has termed the ULFA-I threat to boycott Independence Day as irrelevant.

Notably, the United Liberation Front of Asom- Independent (ULFA-I) led by Paresh Baruah has returned to its customary boycott call on the occasion of Independence Day.

The banned outfit has called for the ‘Assam bandh’ from midnight of August 14 till 6 pm on August 15.

However, terming the ULFA-I’s threat as irrelevant, Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta on Saturday said, “This year, citizens will celebrate Independence Day with double enthusiasm. Moreover, search operations have been intensified this year as various gatherings and other activities in the city have increased.”

Mahanta also mentioned that the Assam Police is keeping a close watch on oil sectors, bus stops, railway stations and other areas to ensure safety, security and thwart any attempt by intruders coming from across the border.
