Silchar, April 13, 2019
Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 13th, 2019 launched a blistering attack on Congress’ candidate for Silchar constituency, Sushmita Dev.
Addressing an election rally here, Sarma said, “A vote for Dev is a vote for Pakistan. If you vote for her, it means victory for Pakistan. I urge the people to choose the right leader who will lead India to a bright future.”
Further, he mentioned that the BJP will pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 but with the consent of the people. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi already said that the BJP will implement the Bill but not without the consent of the people,” Sarma said.
The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship. In other words, it amends the Citizenship Act of 1955. The Bill lapsed in February after it failed to make it to the Rajya Sabha.
It may be noted, Modi on April 11th, 2019 said the BJP is committed to passing the Bill once the NDA returns to power after the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The BJP manifesto also mentions that the party will try to revive the Bill.
