GUWAHATI: The much-awaited political front of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) saw the light of the day as they floated the new political party under the name ‘Asom Jatiya Parishad’ (AJP).
The convenor of the party Basanta Deka announced this in a press conference in Guwahati on Monday.
He said, “The new party will work with the main motto of ‘Assam first, always and ever’ and will have the slogan-‘Ghore Ghore Ami’ (We will reach every household). Already grassroot work to build the ground across the state has already begun.”
Aimed to be an alternative regional force in the state, the AJP aimed to become a secular political forum representing all the caste and communities of the state.
“We are trying to unite all the forces which want to work for the future of Assam and the indigenous people of the state. We are open to all but at the same time, we need to be cautious about whom to accept. It needs to be checked why they want to join us for political gains or believing in the principles of regionalism,” Deka added.
He said that already several political parties in the state have been contacting AJP for possible alliance.
The party has already started the organizational work in Assam’s 25 districts and aimed to contest in some 80-100 seats of 126 in the coming state polls slated next year.
AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “To fight against all the anti-Assam and communal forces, the AJP has been formed responding to the demand and suggestion of the people of Assam. I believe all the regional forces will jointly make this movement a success.”
