The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) said it will move the Supreme Court as it is unhappy with the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list which was released in Assam on August 31^st, 2019.

“The AASU is not happy with the final NRC list. It is rather an incomplete list,” said Lurinjyoti Gogoi, general secretary, AASU. He further said, “The excluded figure did not even reach near the numbers officially announced by the authorities on various occasions. We will appeal in the Supreme Court to re-verify the loopholes and discrepancies in this final list.”

Gogoi said that the central and the state government has failed to publish an error-free NRC. “The government had enough time to prepare an error-free NRC under the supervision of the top court. But, it has failed to do so,” Gogoi said.

The AASU general secretary further said, “An error-free NRC for the greater interest of the indigenous people of the state was a long pending demand of the AASU.”

It may be mentioned that a total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found elegible for inclusion in the final NRC while 19,06,657 persons were found ineligible. The NRC updation process was started in 2013 as per the order of the Supreme Court. Since then the apex court has been monitoring the whole procedure. More than 40 lakh people were excluded from the final draft NRC that was published in 2018.

The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) has also expressed its dissatisfaction over the final NRC list. The Assam Congress also slammed the government for its ‘failure’ to publish an error-free NRC.
