With most of the AASU leaders taking off to join party politics, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided to impose a three-month cooling-off period for the leaders between leaving the students’ body and joining a political party.
The AASU general conference held at Jonai in Assam’s Dhemaji district on October 26th, 2019, unanimously decided that its cadre must serve a cooling-off period and no office-bearer will be allowed to join a political party after completion of his tenure.
The AASU leaders informed media that several AASU leaders joining political parties has affected the apolitical character of the organization. Hence AASU was discussing for long on how to tackle this problem of leaders joining political parties immediately after completing their tenure.
Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal was an AASU president. Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and several ministers of his cabinet are also former AASU leaders.
Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was once an AASU leader. Present Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta, Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patwary were all AASU leaders, who took part in the six-year-long anti-foreigners’ movement. The movement sought to detect and deport illegal infiltrators from Assam, which led to signing of the Assam accord in 1985.
