‘Biased, Unfit’: Congress MP Writes To Guv On New NRC Coordinator

Hitesh Dev Sarma was appointed as the NRC co-ordinator of Assam last month

Congress MP from Barpeta constituency Abdul Khaleque has written to Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi over the ‘controversial’ appointment of Hitesh Dev Sarma as the new coordinator of National Register of Citizens(NRC) in the state.

In his letter, the Congress leader urged the Governor to take cognizance of the issue with the concerned authorities on “urgent basis” and “cancel” the appointment of Sarma.

Khaleque pointed out that Sarma has been sharing a lot of controversial posts on his social media against a particular community and that such “anomalous” acts might “aggravate the already deplorable conditions”.

“it is not desirable to appoint such a biased person to handle a highly sensitive person i.e state coordinator of the NRC. From the various posts, the biasness of Mr Dev Sarma is quite apparent and palpable. His conducts and views regarding this matter prima facie shows a high degree of biasness” the letter read.

He further added that “Mr Dev Sharma is not a fit person to handle such a sensitive post.”

It may be mentioned that the Assam government last month had appointed Sarma as the new Assam NRC coordinator. He was earlier appointed as the executive director of the Assam NRC updation exercise. Sarma was last posted as the Secretary, Urban Development and Finance Department, Assam.
