The lady professor from Guwahati, accused of posting a controversial comment about Pulwama Terror Attack on her Facebook page, was grilled by police here on March 4th, 2019.
The Gauhati High Court has recently granted interim anticipatory bail to Papri Banerjee, Assistant Professor at Icon Commerce College. Silchar and Chandmari Police Stations had registered cases against her under Sections 294/505/507 IPC read with Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.
As per media reports, she was interrogated for around four hours. Chandmari Police has registered a suo moto case against the lecturer. The lady alleged threats of being raped and murdered on social media led her to into hiding.
A total of 16 cases were registered in Assam across 13 districts out of which 15 people were arrested. A case against Banerjee has been lodged at Chandmari Police Station in Guwahati. She has been booked U/S 505 IPC, R/W Sec 66 IT Act.
It may be mentioned that while granting her interim anticipatory bail, Justice Hitesh Kumar Sharma observed: “Considering the materials available before the court as of now, this court is of the view that till a final decision is taken on this application, on perusal of the materials in the case diary, the petitioner be allowed to remain on interim pre-arrest bail till the date fixed.”
The Judge also directed the professor to appear before the investigating police officer and also to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 15,000. She has also been asked not to leave the territorial jurisdiction of the aforesaid police station, without prior written permission from its officer-in-charge. The case is now posted on March 20th, 2019.
