ACs In India Will Have 24 Degrees as Default Temperature

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE), recently gave a mandate that all air conditioners in India will have a default temperature of 24 degrees. The BEE mandate is a part of the new energy performance standards made in consultation with the central government.

This means that after a person switches on a new AC, the default temperature it will start at 24 degrees and that he/she can manually change the room temperature. The move has been taken in a bid to save electricity as lower the temperature of the AC, the more electricity its consumes.

“All brands and types of star-labelled RACs, which are rated from one star to five stars based on their energy efficiencies and manufactured, commercially purchased or sold in India, shall ensure default setting of temperature in the room air conditioners at 24 degrees Celsius, with effect from January 1, 2020,” read a notification.

This mandate is applicable to all ACs sold in India under star-labelled ratings from BEE. This star labelling is mandatory for all ACs with a cooling capacity up to 10,465 watts. The BEE launched a voluntary star-labelling programme for fixed-speed RACs in 2006 and this programme became mandatory on January 12, 2009.

BEE is a statutory body under the Ministry of Power which is mandated to implement policy and programmes in energy efficiency and conservation. The objective of such initiatives is to reduce energy intensity in the country by optimizing energy demand and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) which are responsible for global warming and climate change. India has committed to reducing 33-35% of GHG emission by 2030 as part of the document submitted to UNFCCC.
