Agar Growers, Traders Hail Sonowal Govt For Relaxing Curb On Agar Tree Cultivation

Golaghat: The growers and traders of Agarwood in Assam’s Golaghat district hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) led Sarbananda Sonowal government for relaxing the curb on the cultivation and felling(on non-forest land) of the scented Agar tree in the state.

The government has allowed plantation and sale of Agar up to 35 bighas of land and also approved setting up of an International Trade Centre for Agar in Golaghat district.

Agar (Aquilaria agallocha Roxb) are found in several parts of Assam including Sadiya, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Darrang, Goalpara and Cachar in Assam, Khasi Hills and Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya state and also in the forests of Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh in the region.

CM Sonowal in one of his tweet stated, “In a landmark decision, the Cabinet approved growing and cutting of Agar and Chandan trees on non-forest lands. This will promote the cultivation of Agar and Chandan in the state. The Cabinet also approved setting up of an International Trade Centre for Agar in Golaghat.”

“This is one of the revolutionary decisions taken by the cabinet for the agar traders and the growers so far. This is definitely going to uplift the economy of the state,” said an Agar trader.

It may be mentioned that the Agar cultivation has been a source of livelihood in several areas of the Golaghat district including areas such as Nahoroni, Batipuria and so on. The first association of Agar growers and traders in India was set up way back in 1972 in Golaghat’s Nahoroni by the name, Agarwood and Attar Society Ltd.

Agarwood oil is a highly prized product extensively used in the perfume industry. Assam’s Hojai district is one of the hubs of agarwood oil extraction.
