Agitators Paint Guwahati Walls With Anti-CAB Slogans

The Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there has triggered widespread protests in Assam

Protests over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill or CAB, which will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 9th, 2019, have intensified in Assam.

Multiple rallies and marches are being held in Assam. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 9th, 2019 will introduce the Bill in the Lok Sabha.

Unknown protestors painted anti-Bill slogans slamming Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the freshly-painted walls on the Raj Bhawan Road, Uzan Bazar, Guwahati. The district administration has once again deployed workers to repaint the walls.

Guwahati is being decked up to welcome Japan Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Indo-Japan Annual Summit scheduled for December 15th and 16th, 2019.  Walls, footpath, road dividers are being painted on the routes through which the convoys of Prime Ministers of both sides are likely to pass.

The Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there has triggered widespread protests in Assam.

Agitators are protesting against the Bill saying it goes against the spirit of secularism and will nullify the provisions of the historic 1985 Assam Accord, which fixed March 24th, 1971, as the cut-off date to identify illegal foreigners.
