    Air India Express jet crashes in Kerala; nation mourns the deaths

    According to a source, at least three persons have died till the filing of this report besides severely injuring more than 20 passengers on board.

    GUWAHATI: An Air India Express flight No IX 1344, which arrived at the Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ) in Karipur, Kerala from Dubai, crash-landed on Friday evening after skidded off the runway.

    According to a source, at least three persons have died till the filing of this report besides severely injuring more than 20 passengers on board.  

    The Air India Express authority in its tweeter handle said, “We regret that there has been an incident regarding our aircraft VT GHK, OPERATING IX 1344 DXB CCJ. We will update as we get the details.”

    The fateful plane, which carried at least 170 passengers, attempted to land at the Kozhikode International Airport at around 7:40 PM on Friday.

    Taking cognizance of the accident, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said “Have instructed Police and Fire Force to take urgent action in the wake of the plane crash at the Kozhikode International airport (CCJ) in Karipur. I have also directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for rescue and medical support.”

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Distressed to learn about the tragic accident of Air India Express aircraft in Kozhikode, Kerala. Have instructed NDRF to reach the site at the earliest and assist with the rescue operations.”

    Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman said, “Shocked to know of the Air India Express tragedy in Kozhikode. Hope and prayers for all on board.”

    External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, “Deeply distressed to hear about the Air India Express tragedy at Kozhikode. Prayers are with the bereaved families and those injured.”

    Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Extremely saddened at the news of the tragic Air India Express flight accident in Kozhikode. My heart goes out for the passengers and crew members. I pray for their safety and quick recovery.”
