The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)’s Rafiqul Islam who had gained the lead of votes over his nearest rival Shamsul Hoque(Congress) for the Jania seat came out as the clear winner on October 24th, 2019.
While Islam sweeped the Jania seat with 81608 votes, the triangular contestants: BJP’s Towfiqur Rahman settled with 15239 and Samsul Hoque (INC) got 46571 votes respectively.
“I am grateful and immensely thankful to all the people, who have cast their vote and made be win the seat,” said Rafiqul Islam while addressing the media.
“Soon after taking the charge I will be addressing all the issues of the citizens– from the education sector, erosion to farmers’ problem, there are a host of problems which need attention. But the topmost priority will be the NRC and its aftermath. In Jania, there are about 12000 genuine citizens whose names did not figure in the citizenship list. We need to resolve this at the earliest,” he added.
It may be mentioned that an estimated 72.62 percent of over 6.78 lakh electorate had exercised their franchise in the by-election to the four Assembly seats in Assam on October 21st, 2019.
Meanwhile, the incumbent BJP registered a big win in three assembly seats in Ratabari, Sonari and Rangapara assembly seats. The three victorious candidates are: Bijoy Malakar in Ratabari, Rajen Borthakur (Rangapara) and Nabanita Handique (Sonari).
