GUWAHATI: Twitter has suspended the account of controversial Hindu right-wing support group the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) on Thursday.
The development came days later the LRO who claims itself as a human right group working for armed forces n Hindu, tweeted an alleged doctored video of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal in which he was saying that he would then set up “an Islamic nation” with the help of the Congress if comes to power.
Its tweet had said, “Shocking, Badaruddin Ajmal threatens converting entire Assam into an Islam with the help of INCAssam (Congress a party it is in alliance with for the assembly polls) and INCIndia. Is Congress in SECRET understanding with Ajmal for Partition 2?” It also tagged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to “look into the issue and initiate action” against the AIUDF.
The video went viral within minutes.
Ajmal immediately reacted that he would sue LRO for circulating fake news against him and claimed that the LRO has ‘doctored’ his speech.
Fact-checking later found that the original speech of Ajmal – uploaded in 2019 on YouTube from a public speech – spoke exactly the opposite of what LRO tweeted. Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi in that speech in the run-up to the 2019 parliamentary polls, Ajmal had said, “The Mughals had ruled this India for 800 years and then British for 200 years but had never dreamt of making it neither an Islamic nation nor a Christian nation. In independent India, the Congress has run this country for 55 of the 70 years but too did not anything like that.”
Though the reason behind, Twitter deleting LRO’s account was yet to be known, the group in its official Facebook page has posted: “#URGENT LRO n Dalit Positive Movement twitter accounts suspended by Twitter. LRO had shared Sputnik Report on US Hindu student Rashmi Samant whose Twitter account was suspended n later restored… We will move to court against Twitter India for the same…”
LRO had earlier alleged Ajmal’s NGO Ajmal foundation of collecting funds from foreign Islamic fundamentalist groups.
