Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) chief Badruddin Ajmal’s comment on Hindu marriage has stirred a fresh political debate with political parties while asking the Muslim leader to make an unconditional public apology were also seem to blame each other for allegedly instigating him.

On Friday, Ajmal taking a jibe at population control and family planning ideas said that Hindus should follow the ‘Muslim formula’ of getting married at an early age to have more children. He said, “Muslim men marry at the age of 20-22, and Muslim women also marry at 18 after the permissible age by the government. On the other hand, they [Hindus] keep one, two or three illegal wives before marriage; they don’t give birth to babies, enjoy themselves and save money.”

However, Ajmal’s statement did not go down well and sharp reactions started to follow immediately.

While the ruling BJP termed Ajmal’s statement as a ‘cheap’ tactic to demine the Hindu culture and asked the Muslim community to withdraw the ‘Maulana’ title from him, Opposition parties claimed that Ajmal’s statement was a part of BJP’s politics for ongoing Gujarat polls.

Senior Assam cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said, “Badaruddin Ajmal is a political terrorist. His recent unnecessary comment on ‘Muslim formula’ is utterly disgusting and awful. It’s indeed a shameful matter that a representative of Assam in Parliament can have such narrow thoughts on Indian civilization and womanhood. We strongly condemn the remarks passed by him and expect that Assamese people will never let this kind of mentalities flourish in our state.”

On the other hand, the leader of the Opposition parties and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia alleged that Ajmal’s statement was not only unacceptable but also derogatory towards women. “It’s very unfortunate that an MP from Assam has made such a ‘cheap’ statement. Assam police should register a suo motto case against Ajmal for a such divisive statement which may trigger tension between the two communities. The chief minister must intervene,” Saikia said.

Congress MP Abdul Khaleque said, “Who is Badruddin Ajmal to decide anyone’s marriage age? Our constitution has given everyone the right to marry whenever they want and to whomever they want. I would request women from the Muslim community to also come out against such a statement.”

Khaleque further alleged that Ajmal might have made the statement on BJP’s direction. “Ajmal has always been a puppet of the BJP and who knows it might be a part of a conspiracy to polarize vote banks in Gujarat. Otherwise, why he was not arrested yet? Why BJP government has not taken any steps against him even after 24 hours?”

All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) also demanded the state chief minister to take action against Ajmal. “Our sources have said that the video of his statement has gone viral in Gujarat. It might be a part of a conspiracy. We dare state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to arrest him immediately,” the student leaders demanded.

Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi also said, “It’s very surprising that no Hindu groups who usually lodge complaints even on Facebook posts are now silent and inactive. It clearly says that both BJP and AIUDF are working together to polarize the society for their political benefits.”

Meanwhile, Asom Jatiya Parishad leader Dulu Ahmed has filed a complaint against Ajmal at Hatigaon police station.

However, chief minister Sarma was yet to react to the statement. Ajmal had even mocked Sarma on his ‘love jihad’ comment saying that the chief minister should also practice love jihad.
