GUWAHATI: Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and three other Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leaders Dharjya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal, and Manas Konwar who were arrested by NIA under the UAPA for ‘waging war’ against the nation in December 2019, have compiled a book on the failure of the BJP government in the state in fulfilling their poll promises of 2016.
The four while in jail had not only analyzed BJP’s vision document released before the last state assembly polls, they have come up with a 59-page book pointing to the government’s failure in implementing its own promises.
On Friday, Raijor Dal (RD), a newly floated regional front in the state under the leadership of Akhil Gogoi, released the book for the public ahead of the state polls. The book was released by the party’s working president Bhasko D Saikia and other leaders as Gogoi has been still fighting for his release. The three other arrested leaders were, however, released on bail already.
Saikia said, “The four while in jail had complied the book by collecting data and RTI reports. The BJP in its vision document before the 2016 state assembly polls had made 476 promises to come to power. But after the completion of its term, we have found that the state government has only fulfilled only five of them so far. It’s a shame.”
The party which has planned to give a tough fight to BJP in the upcoming state polls decided to circulate almost one lakh copies of the book amongst the public.
The release of the book came a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We will also send a copy of the book to the Prime Minister so that he must realize how his party had made fake promises to the people of the state.”
Citing a few of the unfulfilled promises, Saikia added, “Though promised, the state government did nothing to implement Assam Accord clause 6, to grant ST status to the six communities of Assam, to complete the NRC process and identify the illegal migrants amongst others. Besides, the state government supported Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), privatized the Borjhar airport, resumed the construction of lower Subansiri hydel project and many other anti-Assam policies.”
The party also dared the BJP led the state government to release its leader Akhil Gogoi before the state polls. The party believed that the Sarbananda Sonowal led state government has been afraid of Gogoi and his release may impact BJP’s poll results.
“We are going to challenge the Gauhati high court’s order before the Supreme Court soon. It’s sad that despite the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court had granted him bail; the high court scrapped the order,” he said.
Saikia alleged that the investigating agency of NIA has slapped the charges on Gogoi based on the statements of two ‘protected witness’ who claimed that Gogoi had sent them to Maoist camps for training.
