Akhil Gogoi Has No Covid-19 Symptoms: IGP Prison

    By Debananda Medak

Guwahati: The Guwahati central jail authority on Monday clarified that jailed Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has no Covid-19 symptoms the way rumours are being circulated by a section of people.

Talking to Time8, Assam Police Inspector General of Prisons, Dasarath Das said, “There are no such major health issues being faced by Akhil Gogoi. He (Gogoi) has been taking medicines for ailments like joint pain and skin allergy in a routine manner as prescribed by the Board of Doctors earlier.”

Notably, over the last couple of days, a section of people have been circulating that Gogoi’s health condition was deteriorating and showed Covid-19 symptoms. Consequently, the speculation has stressed the relatives and well-wishers of the peasant leader. Moreover, the KMSS also alleged that the BJP-led Centre as well as the state government had been conspiring to kill Gogoi inside the jail premises by ignoring the health issues encountered by its leader.

Rubbishing the rumours, Das said, “If there were any of such symptoms with Gogoi, the doctors would have informed us as well as to the department of health immediately for the necessary measures.”

According to the IGP, only two jail inmates have been tested Covid-19 positive so far inside the Guwahati central jail. “One of the jail inmates, Jintu Nath was tested positive. However, he has recovered days back. Presently, one Muzammil Ali has been undergoing treatment at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, Panabazar. Apart from these two, there is no report of any jail inmates being tested positive for coronavirus,” Das claimed.

The IGP added that though outside visitors are presently restricted owing to the rapid spike of the pandemic coronavirus, inmates are permitted for a telephonic conversation to let them establish contacts with their respective lawyers and relatives.

However, on Monday, taking cognizance of the circulation, Gogoi’s wife Geetashree Tamuli expressed concern through social media, particularly on Facebook and said, “Akhil Gogoi is not well, showed Covid-19 symptoms. I do not know what shall I to say.”

Since his arrest on December 12, 2019, from Jorhat, Gogoi has been kept in various jails across the state besides being brought to Delhi for a few days by the National Investigating Agency.
