“Akhil Gogoi is an actor”: BJP minister Pijush Hazarika

Guwahati: BJP minister Pijush Hazarika termed Sibsagar legislator Akhil Gogoi as an ‘actor’ after a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court discharged Gogoi from all charges and set him free.

Gogoi who was admitted to Gauhati medical college hospital (GMCH) where he was undergoing medical treatment while under judicial custody so far, walked out in open a few hours after the court discharged him of the NIA cases.

Coming down heavily on Gogoi, the minister said, “How someone who is undergoing medical treatment can immediately walk out of the hospital? It means that he was not having any physical issues but was only admitted to the hospital when he was supposed to be in jail. Was his acting in the name of treatment?”

The minister, however, added that he had no information about Gogoi’s mental health condition.

“I don’t consider him as a man with high moral value. When there has been a dearth of medical beds due to Covid situation, Gogoi was lodging in a cabin of GMCH for no reason,” Hazarika, the minister for water resources and parliamentary affairs, alleged.

Earlier during the day, hours after the NIA special court discharged anti Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) leader and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi of all charges, the leader came out in open.

The peasant leader is likely to visit Sibsagar on Friday.

On Thursday morning, a special NIA court cleared him and his three associates of all charges under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 for their alleged role in the violent anti-CAA agitation in Assam in December 2019.

The independent MLA from Assam and his two other associates were on June 22 cleared of charges in the first case.

He was under judicial custody since his arrest in 2019 December during the anti CAA movement in the state.
