Agartala, April 21, 2019

To avoid violence like the first phase polling in the state of Tripura, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent 28 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces (CPF) to the East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency where polling is scheduled on April 23rd, 2019.

It may be mentioned, following the violence that erupted during the first phase of Lok Sabha election in the Tripura West seat on April 11th, 2019, the ECI deferred the polling date of the Tripura East seat to April 23rd, 2019 from April 18th, 2019 citing law and order situation.

The ECI has also appointed four central police observers including three central police observers and a special central police observer to closely oversee the use of security forces in polling in the mountainous tribal reserved parliamentary constituency.

The state Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) Sriram Taranikanti had informed the media that if necessary voters would be provided security to facilitate smooth polling and casting of votes by all the eligible 1,257,944 voters, including 620,291 women electorate.

Action on poll officials

Following the violence in the West Tripura constituency, the ECI initiated action against the polling officials, micro observers and the polling agents of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the charge of carrying out unlawful activities in the polling booths on April 11th, 2019 after the entire opposition came together demanding fresh election for the seat alleging booth capturing and rigging.

The ECI also carried out a probe which confirmed that there was largescale “booth capturing” in the Tripura West constituency by the ruling BJP.  In seven assembly segments of the constituency, instances of booth capturing and rigging came into light.

The Khuwai police have served a notice to the Tripura Congress president and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Burman in connection with a suo motto case registered against him for slapping a supporter of the ruling BJP’s junior partner IPFT inside a police station.
