Amid surge in COVID-19 cases, Gauhati HC issues additional guidelines for functioning of subordinate courts in Assam

Guwahati: Owing to the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Gauhati High Court directed all the subordinate courts to take up a limited number of cases from Wednesday onwards.

However, the concerned district & sessions judges/presiding officers/chief judicial magistrates/SDJM (M) may here/take up any other item which is deemed to be of utmost importance and urgency, the Gauhati High Court stated in a notification.

“The district & sessions judges/presiding officers/chief judicial magistrates/SDJM (M) shall ensure the minimum presence of court staff in each court without causing inconvenience/disruption in the court proceeding as far as practicable,” the notification reads.

Also, entry of outsiders shall be strictly prohibited in the court premises unless specifically directed by the concerned authority or unless the personal appearance of a party is required in a judicial proceeding.

All courtrooms must be thoroughly sanitized after court hours on a day to day basis.

Furthermore, the district & sessions judges/presiding officers/chief judicial magistrates/SDJM (M) shall inform the registry as to the steps taken/proposed to be taken.
