The Centre on January 10th, 2020 announced that the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) has come into effect.

A gazette notification was issued by the Union Home Ministry signed by Anil Malik, Additional Secretary on Friday which read that the act has come into force.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section [2] of the section 1 of the Citizenship [Amendment] Act, 2019 [47 of 201], the central government hereby appoints the 10th day of January, 2020, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the notification read.

As the Rajya Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on December 11th, 2019, massive protests broke out in Assam. Protests against the contentious CAA are still going on in the state with agitators staging sit-ins across the state.
