Amidst Lockdown, Government Opens New Toll Gate In Sonapur

Commuters have alleged that the toll gate was set up without a notice

Amidst the lockdown due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the government and NHAI has opened a new toll gate in Sonapur, Guwahati without any notice.

This move by the government is widely criticized by commuters and also locals.

With this new toll gate, there will be two gates within a span of 100 kilometres and hence people heading from Guwahati towards Nagaon or vice versa will have pay double the toll.

Locals in Sonapur have said that this will be a very problematic this as now the locals will be forced to pay toll even if the just cross the toll gate for their daily necessities. Similarly, people engaged with share taxis have also stated that this move might affect the fare of the buses, as well as share taxis, engage on that particular route.

A commuter who says that he needs to visit Nagaon frequently but with the two toll gates being on the same lane, he will be forced to pay double toll every time he travels. He added that the total will be Rs 365 if it is combined. That is more than triple the fare he would have to pay if he used a bus service instead of a price car. “It seems that the government is taking all advantages of this particular pandemic lockdown”, he added.
