The anger against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act has now knocked Bhaona, a traditional art form of Assam.
People in the state have now chosen Bhaona, which is a medium to convey religious messages, register their protests. The anti-CAA protest was reflected in a Bhaona performance held at the Dhing in Assam’s Nagaon district on February 8th, 2020. Hirak Jyoti Bora, a Bhaona artist was seen playing the role of a demon opposing the CAA.
It is pertinent to be mentioned that the state has witnessed continuous massive protests since the Citizenship Amendment Bill became an act. Later, the protest was spread to the other parts of the country. The bill was passed by the parliament on December 11th, 2019 and the act came into force on January 10th, 2020.
The act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian and Parsi, who have become the victims of religious persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh and entered into India on or before December 31st, 2014 and lived without documentation.
