Anti-CAA Protests Dampen Christmas Spirit In Guwahati, Lull In Market

Section 144 was imposed in 10 districts of Assam following the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act

The unabated protests, violent in some parts, against the amended Citizenship Act have dampened the Christmas mood in the markets in Guwahati.

The act triggered massive protest across the Assam and other states also since December 11th, 2019, which impacted the market severely. The road and rail movements were disrupted which caused less supply of goods and sky-high price rise.

Usually, the city decks up in December and citizens, as well as visitors, revel in the spirit of festivity. But this time, the retailers are facing a tough time waiting for a change in mood in the market with just two days left for Christmas.

The movement against the act has pulled out people to the streets in unison regardless of religion, caste, creed and sex. Protests are still going on across the state with the participation of people in huge number.

Meanwhile, the Assam Christian Forum, while expressing his grave concern over the present situation, has sought a solution to Section 144 CrPC imposed in the State in the run-up to Christmas. The Forum also appealed the state police department to take steps so that the people can celebrate the festival without any fear.
