Anti-CAA Protests: German IIT-M Student, Whose Placard Drew Nazi Reference, Sent Back

Lindenthal had a semester left of his post-graduation in Physics

A German student, who was at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) under an exchange programme, had to leave India apparently for participating in protest programmes against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA).

During a protest in Chennai, he was seen carrying a placard that made a reference to the Nazi rule in his own country: “1933 to 1945 – we have been there”.

Jakob Lindenthal was at IIT Madras in the Department of Physics for the past six months. He said the Foreigners Regional Registration Office had given him “oral directions” to leave India soon after he returned to Chennai after a short trip to Bengaluru, the Scroll reported.

A students’ body, ChintaBar, tweeted in solidarity with Lindenthal. He was scheduled to leave India in May 2020.
