In wake of non-stop protests, the vice-chancellors (VCs) of about 20 government and private universities in Assam have appealed to students to maintain restraint and not to endanger their future but help in maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
The appeal by the VCs was published in some newspapers in Guwahati. The VCs pointed out that the prevailing situation in the state may affect the future of the student community. The appeal said that it is everybody’s duty to ensure that the educational system in the state remains healthy and strong.

The appeal has been signed by Vice-chancellors of Gauhati University, Krishnakanta Handique State Open University, National Law University, Assam Agricultural University, Dibrugarh University, Tezpur University, Bodoland University, Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, Madhavdev University, Bhattadev University, Majuli Cultural University, Kumar Bhaskarvarma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Rabindra Nath Tagore University, Assam Women University, Assam Science and Technology University Assam Rajiv Gandhi Samabay University and Royal Global
University.
Pro VC of Assam Downtown University, registrars of Cotton State University and Kaziranga University has also signed the appeal.
The appeal said, “The students are the future resources of the state. In this era of globalisation, we want the students of Assam to march hand in hand with the students of the world. The students must cooperate so that the examinations are held as per the schedule and we don’t miss any academic year.”
“We appeal to all students and their guardians to cooperate in maintaining peace, harmony, unity, brotherhood in the state,” they said.
Violent protests erupted in Assam after the Rajya Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on December 11th, 2019. The streets of the state turned into a veritable battle zone littered with burnt tyres, logs, stones, rubber pellets and teargas shells as seething protesters mostly students descended on the streets opposing the Bill.
