Pro-talk United Liberation Front of Asom leader Anup Chetia on February 5th, 2020, urged the Centre not to delay the signing the peace agreement with the group.
“We will continue the peace talk process with the Centre. We hope an agreement would be signed with the Centre ahead of Bohag Bihu,” Chetia said.
Talking about the possibility of ULFA-I’s joining in the talk process, Chetia said, “The ULFA-I also made a statement about their joining in the talk process. Though they made it clear that they will join the talk process only on the issue of sovereignty of Assam, it is now completely up to the Centre whether it agrees or not.”
The self-styled Commander-in-Chief of ULFA-I, Paresh Baruah is likely to come overground and sign a peace accord with the Centre ahead of the Assam’s biggest festival Bohag Bihu, Outlook reported.
Earlier, the Assam Finance Minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma dropped hints and told reporters in Guwahati that the Centre is more than willing to hold dialogue with the ULFA-I for the sake of permanent peace in Assam and the Northeast.
