Guwahati: Taking a dig at the Assam speaker Biswajit Daimary’s remark on oil price hike in the country, Bobbeeta Sharma, Chairperson Media Department of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) claimed that despite the fact that the current international crude oil price is $ 44.82 ( 2020- 2021) the benefit of low crude oil price has not been given to the consumers.
In a press statement, Bobbeeta Sharma questioned the Assam speaker Biswajit Daimary saying, “Current international crude oil price is $ 44.82 ( 2020- 2021) so why is the rate of petrol diesel price high? The benefit of low crude oil price has not been given to the consumers.”
“I am sure the Speaker knows that average Crude Oil rates per bbl had reached close to $ 112 in 2011-12 and when Congress left office, the average crude oil rates were $105.52 per barrel. But the petrol prices were kept at Rs 71.51 per litre,” she added in her statement.
Instead, the present BJP-led Government is collecting huge revenue by continuously increasing excise duty. The Modi government has earned more than Rs 25 Lakh crore through excise duty in the last 7 years of its rule. In the last 7 years, the Excise duty on Petrol has been increased by 248% and by 820% on Diesel, alleged Bobbeeta Sharma.
Countering to the statement made by the speaker where he told “Government needs revenue to run the country”, Bobbeeta Sharma further added, “Yes they need revenue but who is Government for? Isn’t it for the people of the country? So if people of the country cannot be given a controlled price of petrol diesel and essential commodities which they can afford especially in pandemic times then they have no business to run government at the taxpayer’s expense. Government money is taxpayers money. It is not their personal money. So if they do not know how to run Government, the BJP should resign. Congress has more experience in running Government without harming the interests of the common man.”
