Guwahati, August 25: Assam’s Hima Das breaks the national record in women’s 400m as she runs the semi-finals in 51.00 seconds. She qualified for the Women’s 400 metres final.
Hima broke Manjit Kaur’s national record of 51:05 set in 2014 in the semifinals of 400 meters.
Bringing glory to the nation, sprinter Hima, popularly known as Dhing Express, created a history after clinching a gold medal in the 400-meter final at IAAF- World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland in July. Das took only 51.46 seconds to claim the top position in the 400-meter final. She hails from Kandhulimari village in Dhing, Nagaon.
Hima said that if she wins gold, it will be special for India, and also for Assam. She mentioned that there’s only been one track and field athlete from Assam before her – Bhogeswar Baruah – who has won gold in the 800m event at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok.
