Guwahati: At least 18 students of Dibrugarh University were rusticated by authorities on Monday for their alleged involvement in the Anand Sarma ragging case.

A first-semester MCom student of Dibrugarh University, Anand Sarma, allegedly jumped from the second floor of a hostel building of the University after being fed up with ragging by his seniors for the past few days.

The rusticated students have been identified as Galab Deka (resident of Pathsala), Niranjan Yadav (resident of Sivasagar), Kalyan Dutta (resident of Lakhimpur), Simanta Hazarika (resident of Jorhat), Pranjit Boruah (resident of Majuli), Chandan Jyoti Borah Sonowal (resident of Dhemaji), Shivam Shroff (resident of Tinsukia), Pisang Kham Boruah (resident of Charaideo), Pallav Borah (resident of Sivasagar), Chitrabon Baruah (resident of Bihpuria), Narayan Adhikari (resident of Sadia), Nayanjit Thengal (resident of Golaghat), Monuranjan Das (resident of PNGBCN, Dibrughar University), Mousum Phukan (resident of Mogorahat changmai gaon), Bishal Deka (resident of Sonitpur),

Debasish Biswas (resident of Sivasagar), Amar Jyoti Nath (resident of 7TH MILE DUKANI GAON), Nabadeep Sarma (resident of Byashpara).

As per sources, Anand was allegedly tortured both physically and mentally by some of the students of the hostel of Dibrugarh University in Assam. However, he is currently undergoing treatment at the Aditya Hospital in Dibrugarh in Assam and is stated to be stable. 

Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu has condemned the incident saying that such activities won’t be tolerated. On Monday, taking to Twitter, Pegu wrote, “I strongly condemn the ragging incident in Dibrugarh University where a student has been hurt grievously. Asking DU authority and police to take strong action. We will not tolerate such activities.”

“I am also asking university authorities to be vigilant and take prompt action whenever any attempt of ragging is reported. Ex-students should not be allowed to stay in hostels”, he added.

Meanwhile, police in the Dibrugarh district of Assam have arrested one individual and detained three others in connection with the case. The arrested individual has been identified as Niranjan Thakur, said an official.

Sarita Sharma, the victim’s mother has lodged an FIR at Dibrugarh Police station against the culprits allegedly involved in ragging and torturing her son. The FIR also alleged that the accused attempted to kill Anand Sarma, loot his money, snatch his mobile phone and the accused also took objectionable photographs by putting alcohol and weed in his hand with a conspiracy for their future defence.

She has named an ex-students identified as Rahul Chetry in the case.

It was also learned that on November 17, a victim has been complained to the University authority regarding his suffering due to the ragging by some students. He has given a written complaint to the Warden of ‘C’ block of the “Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas” (PNGBCN hostel) and mentioned the names of 10 students, sources stated.
