    Assam: 20 endangered vultures found dead in Tinsukia

    In January also, 22 vultures belonging to critically endangered species were found dead near the Dibru Saikhowa National Park in Tinsukia district

    GUWAHATI: In yet another incident of endangered vultures dying unnaturally in Assam’s Tinsukia district, carcasses of some 20 critically endangered vultures were recovered from Ghormora area in the Upper Assam district.

    On Monday morning, villagers found around 28 endangered vultures in a critical condition in a nearby field and alerted the forest officials.

    However, when reached the spot, the forest officials found 20 amongst them dead. Those which were alive were rushed to vets in Tinsukia.

    The reason for the death of the endangered vultures was yet to be ascertained. However, it was suspected to be a case of food poisoning. Forest officials have also found carcasses of cattle near the ground.

    In January also, in a similar incident 22 vultures belonging to critically endangered species were found dead near the Dibru Saikhowa National Park in Tinsukia district.

    In 2019 too, some 37 vultures died in Assam’s Sivasagar district after feeding on pesticide-laced cattle carcass.
