    Assam: 25 people convicted for Teok Tea Estate murder case

    25 people under various sections of Indian Penal Code have been convicted. The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on October 19, 2020.

    Guwahati: After one year and one month, the much awaited judgment in the sensational Teok Tea Estate doctor murder case has been delivered on Monday by Jorhat District and Sessions Judge Robin Phukan.

    25 people under various sections of Indian Penal Code have been convicted. The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on October 19, 2020.

    Since the minimum punishment under the provisions of law that were invoked is Life imprisonment, it is believed that the case going to set a record on various counts.

    The gruesome incident that shattered the conscience of civil society happened on August 31, 2019, in which Dr Deben Dutta, Senior Medical Officer of Dispensary of Teok Tea Estate was murdered by an irate mob holding him responsible for the death of patient identified as Samra Majhi of the tea garden.

    Later, the doctor was rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

    Police arrested 32 persons in connection with the incident form the tea estate within four days and sent them behind bars.

    Three brothers of the deceased Samra Majhi, who accompanied him to hospital, were also arrested by police.

    Condemnations poured in not only from medical fraternity all over India but also series of demonstrations took place across the state demanding stringent action against the perpetrators.

    At this backdrop, the Assam Police Team headed by Siva Prasad, DIG, Eastern Range, investigated and concluded the case in a record time of 21 days and filed an elaborate 602 page Charge sheet on September 21, 2019.

    This is the first case in the country wherein “witness identity concealment approach” was used.
