GUWAHATI: In the last 24 hours, five travellers from Europe and Saudi Arabia tested positive for Covid-19 in Assam.

According to the sources, four person arrived at Silchar airport on December 6, while one arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday night.

As the emergence of Omicron has sounded alarm bells across the country, samples of all five are being sent to Kolkata for genome sequencing to validate the variant present.

The tourists were admitted to the best available medical facilities and are being closely monitored.

The traveller who tested positive in Silchar was from Finland, while the other three were from the Barak Valley’s Karimganj region. They returned from Saudi Arabia and were in home isolation, when the RT-PCR report arrived on Tuesday.

The positive case from Silchar was taken to the Silchar Medical College Hospital, while the other three were taken to the Karimganj government civil hospital.

On Wednesday, all five samples sent to a laboratory in Kolkata for confirmation of Omicron presence, official stated.

According to the sources, the person who arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday night was came from the United Kingdom in November. After staying in Amritsar for a while, she arrived in Guwahati.

Assam reported 134 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active cases in the state to 1,194.
