Guwahati: At least five persons including one Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan in connection with a seizure of suspected heroin in Assam’s Nagaon district on Sunday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sahidul Rahman, Safikul Rahman, Phurkhan Ali, Fakruddin, and Subrata Bhatta.
Subrata Bhatta is a constable at 34 BNC RPF camp.
As per sources, police seized around 18.14 grams of drugs which is suspected to be heroin.
One vehicle and five mobile phones were taken from their possession, sources said.
In another incident, one drug peddler was arrested in Kaliabor ‘s Jakhalabandha village in the Nagaon district.
The accused has been identified as Jamir Ali (27), a resident of Sikoni Borholla.
Police also seized six plastic containers containing 0.52 grams of heroin from his possession.
The Assam government last week said a total of 8,632 drug traffickers were arrested in the state during the last two years.
Presenting the budget for 2023-24 in the assembly, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog said the BJP-led government waged a “full-scale war” on the drug menace. “As on March 2, 2023, 5,191 cases have been registered under NDPS Act and 8,632 drug traffickers have been arrested,” she said.
Neog added 221 kg of heroin, 67,864 kg of ganja and 3,317 kg of poppy straw, among other contraband items, have been seized from the traffickers’ possession during the tenure of the present government.
