Assam: 9 NIT students charged for assaulting junior

Guwahati: Nine students from Assam’s National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar have been charged with allegedly assaulting a junior on campus.

The junior, a Karimganj resident accused his seniors of assaulting him on April 28.

According to sources, police stated that they filed a report and consulted with NIT authorities, who have promised to help with the inquiry.

We are taking measures carefully because they are all students, official added.

As per sources, victim claim that, If I told them about the assault, they threatened to ruin my career. I was initially concerned and waited for NIT to take action. However, after a week, I decided to file a police complaint since if I did not speak up, the perpetrators would be encouraged.

Meanwhile, Institute official stated that there was a fight between two student groups and the junior broke campus rules by going to the cops without notifying institute.

Official further claimed that the case was filed with the help of some lawyers.
